It may seem crazy to others but ever since Steven and I were newly married we have talked about taking our family one day and living in a foreign country. We have dreamed about it and thought about it many times. In fact we have done this once before. When Miranda was just 4 months old we had the opportunity to work in Spain for 2 months and we took it.
Now the opportunity presents itself again and the older kids will remember it this time. We love to think about the experiences that we will have, the lessons that we and our children will learn and the challenges we will face (myself and the children) to learn Spanish. We want our whole family to have eye opening experiences that help them see the world around them with new eyes, get a different perspective, and have better empathy for the people they will meet throughout their life. We anticipate that this experience will be the hardest thing we have ever done as a family but we all anticipate it will be the most rewarding.The Resources
Steven is passionate about his work and his students. He is passionate about the Spanish, language, culture, and literature. It shows in his everyday life and it most certainly shows in the classroom. In 2017 Steven was the recipient of the prestigious George Wythe Award for Excellence in Teaching. It was an amazing honor. This award comes with a Sabbatical from the university and some funding for Steven to spend on professional development. Without this amazing award this dream would not be a reality today. Which brings us to . . . the timing.
The Timing
Let's face it, there is no prefect time in life to take off for 6 months. But, for our family it seems that this is the best timing we could ask for. Our oldest child is not yet in high school; all the children are doing well in school and 6 months away will hurt no one.

ReplyDeletePam, just came across this. I love it! Marriner and I have had a lot of the same wishes in life, but lack the timing and opportunity that have all presented themselves to you. We're ok with that - living where we do is a pretty foreign experience for us, anyway. But it's exciting to see someone else living the dream :)
