On Saturday morning we woke up to find that it looked like the whole town of Chucena had been struck by graffiti. Our American minds went straight to concern. After a little research and asking around there was no need to be concerned.
The tradition is this. Every year all the people in the town that are going to turn 18 during the year get together and have a huge party. Just like in the USA 18 signifies the age to go to war the age of adulthood etc. So the group turning 18 has an all night party where they literally paint the town. They used white wash pain on the roads in front of each of there houses to mark it as their "Kinto" then they used chalk to write on houses, fences, door, and whatever else they wanted to. Mostly we saw the #9 to signify the year 2019.
