On The Trail of Columbus: The Monastery of The Rabida

Saturday we were on the Trail of Columbus in Huelva, Spain.

Our first stop was The Monastery of The Rabida.  This place has strong connection to Columbus and the Discoveries he made.  Columbus lived here for a time doing research and learning how to present his findings to the Queen and King of Spain to ask for their support.  We walked through original doorways that Columbus himself would have walk through as well as rooms that the Current King of Spain has held meetings in.

The Picture above is the small chapel that would have been the exact spot that Columbus would have knelt to pray before he left on his voyage.  Although Columbus was no where near an outstanding righteous guy I do believe that he was led to do what he did, as well as many after him to further the work of the lord to provide a land where people could worship freely.

Anyway it was a cool place to visit and learn a little more about the preparation the Columbus did before he asked for help from Isabel.  It was also funny to find out that someone donated a large sum of money to Columbus so that he could dress in really nice clothes for his visit with Royalty.  We wouldn't want  poor man to go asking the Queen and King for anything now would we.

I hope that you can get the picture that Spain is pretty proud of their heritage and history in all things but especially when it comes to Christopher Columbus.
